15 Super Cool Ways to Create Your Own Yoga Shala at Home (Easy Guide)
Blissful Yoga Shala’s, so beautiful and zen-like, oh the serenity!
Have you been to one of those stunning Shala’s where the moment you walk in, you feel like your soul just took a bubble bath? Soothing energy and a simply stunning space. The calming surrounds instantly transform you into a relaxed and mindful state. You feel somehow more open, a sudden but subtle shift within you, which you find undeniable when you are in a Yoga Shala.
Yoga can be quite addictive whether you are new to it, a returning yogi or a regular practitioner. The energy healing that takes place as well as the obvious physical benefits keep many yogis coming back for more. Whether the teacher’s style is up your ally, no matter how you feel your practice progressed that particular day, one thing is always certain. You will never regret a yoga session. Always, you feel pleased you showed up and the environment alone does you the world of good, whether you realise it or not. Which is why it’s so important to focus on your own wellness.
Is it possible to recreate that yoga vibe at home?
However, there is one thing that always plays on my mind. How can I recreate the vibe of a Yoga Shala at home? There are times it’s simply not possible to get there to my mat at my favourite class. Work happens. Life happens. The commitment to practice is important. Of course, it is, but sometimes it would be nice to rock up to my mat at home and feel the same feels.
Rolling out your mat on the floor and getting stuck in is all well and good. I can throw myself into my practice anywhere. But, I must admit I don’t always come away with that same feeling of serenity taking that approach. You still feel good, still, feel happy enough after, but just not quite the same.
Commitment to practice
I started to identify as time went on, that the environment I create at home is kind of like an additional commitment to my practice. Creating a space to truly relax and committing to my own area for serenity has a huge upside. You don’t actually need to spend as long on the mat to bring down those stress levels and reconnect with the source when you feel true peace in the space you make at home.
Stress fuels me
Stress plays a huge part in the work I do, in fact, the work I have always done. Being able to bring down my blood pressure, release the tension in my body and get ‘in the zone’ is a challenge for me. Creating a Yoga Shala at home transformed my practice.
How a yoga shala can help
Not only did my stress levels improve, but my practice actually improved as well. I’m not sure if it was just a mental shift that occurred, or whether energetically, there’s something more to it.
I began to notice I was able, or perhaps even more willing, to push myself that little further. Prior to practice, I had a rough idea of sequences I wanted to do, however, I started to flow a little longer. I relaxed a little deeper. It was a beautiful energetic and physical shift.
So how can we create a Yoga Shala at home?
1. Get an aromatherapy vaporiser!
Nothing says ‘Yoga Shala’ like the beautiful aromatherapy scents of your favourite essential oils. A relaxing one like lavender or an energising oil like lemongrass can create a beautiful space in preparation for your practice. The lighting can create ambience and the overall feeling of Zen.
2. Bring some nature indoors, add plants to your space
There are so many plants to choose from! You can get as creative as you want to, it’s your Yoga Shala! Investing in so indoor plants can transform your space into what feels like a beautiful Shala indoors equipped with mother nature.
3. Your very own bolster
You are highly unlikely to regret investing in a bolster. It took me about 2 years to do in all honesty, but boy oh boy was I missing out! When I did finally splash out, I bought a turquoise patterned one which looks really lovely. Not that looks matter but in creating our Yoga Shala we are appealing to all of our senses. If a pretty bolster appeals, go for it! I always use a bolster under my knees in Shavasana. It’s my one-way ticket to Zen.
4. Get a Buddha ornament.
I can’t help it, just seeing Buddha helps me chill out. Seeing Buddha actually sometimes guilts me into practice on the days I didn’t think I would! Ha. Now, this is entirely a personal impact. But you may just find that seeing Buddha out of the corner of your eye of a morning, might just lean you back towards your mat as well.
Swoon, heart eye emojis everywhere! I love crystals. They make me super happy on the inside. You can pick up some little ones for not a lot of money at all, but they add so much. If you haven’t found your way to crystals just yet, take yourself off to a spot that sells them and just discover what it is that you are drawn to. As I said, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on them, the little ones work just as well when you are trying them out! Add some of your new-found crystals to your Yoga Shala and notice the difference in energy.
6. Yoga playlist 101
It’s actually pretty hard to find a good playlist, I’ve tried tapping yoga into Spotify and it’s all kind of well, ok it just sucks. I’ve been to amazing classes and enjoyed so many beautiful yoga soundtracks, none of which I’ve been able to find on Spotify to be completely honest. I found myself totally disappointed in the Spotify collection! So, I made my own. I have a more kind of authentic playlist, then I have a modern alternative style.
The modern playlist has some electronic sounds and even some drum and bass for my more intense practices! I split them up depending on my mood. I highly recommend putting a playlist together and having some fun with it. It’s your space and your playlist, but PLEASE share with me your because I’m crying out for new tracks to throw down to on my mat too!
7. Make adequate room
It’s important to make some room for your Shala. Even if it’s only a small space, make sure it’s dedicated to your practice. I started with a teeny tine corner, but that corner was MY corner for MY practice. Making it your own is like, something to be proud of. You will WANT to come to your spiritual centre before long and enjoy your Yoga Shala time and time again.
Maybe there’s a symbol, colour or image that helps you relax. The image could be the ocean, stones, nature or something spiritual. Whatever it is, find something and put it into your own Yoga Shala. Not only will it look beautiful but the visual will help you relax on those days you need some extra encouragement to.
9. Prayer beads
I have a beautiful Mala bead necklace that lives in my Yoga Shala. I sometimes sit with my mala beads to meditate (on my bolster!) taking each bead between my fingers. This practice helps me relax, having the mala beads in my sacred space acts as a reminder to practice this form of meditation. They also look epic!
10. Water Feature
Ha! This one sounds so extravagant/excessive, doesn’t it? Look I’m not saying you should go out and spend a fortune on a human-sized water feature! That would be a little excessive. On the contrary, there are little ones you can get (designed for desks and small spaces) and I have to say, the sound of running water is like, super chill. So relaxing. Amazing to meditate to. Look of eBay and you may be quite surprised by what you find!
11. Tarot Cards
I’m not a full-blown hippy or anything, I love spiritual hippy people though. I’ve always been drawn to the stereotype festivals and through yoga. I’m a hippy at heart but I also work full time in the corporate world. A slice of spirituality is actually, amazing. Tarot Cards might be one step too far for some, but wow, for me they are an amazing addition to my Shala. After my practice, I find the cards to really speak truth to me and have provided support and guidance to me when I have needed it the most.
12. A super cool yoga mat
I know, I know. It’s not about material things. I used to think this was the case, but actually, I truly see it as an investment. We spend more money on much sillier things! Investing in a mat you LOVE does make you feel extra proud to practice on it and if Insta is your thing, it looks epic too!
13. Affirmation cards
This is actually pretty easy to do. Once you’ve chosen your favourite affirmations, you can put them on a document you like the look of and laminate them. Wallah! You have your beautiful affirmation poster, cards or whatever you decide to turn it in to, ready to rock! Pop them in your space to act as a reminder to say your affirmations every time you practice.
