Everyone ideally wants to leave a unique footprint on this big giant ball called earth. We only have one life, one shot (I’m not leading into Eminem lyrics here I swear) we all want to leave some kind of a legacy.
Our own story to tell
Ssomething we can tell our kids about, ideally something to inspire our grandkids down the track, an interesting story of how we spent our time during our own fascinating journey on earth.
When we are feeling ‘meh’
How is it, that we can sometimes find ourselves feeling ‘meh’ at work, or during our studies? We know we want money, we know we want to achieve and we also know we want something cool to tell the grandkids later on, so why oh why can we find ourselves in the zone of ‘can’t be bothered’?
Why it happens to us
Well, there’s a whole bunch of reasons behind the ‘meh’ attitude towards our endeavors. For me, it’s sometimes because of my poor diet choices, lack of sleep, stress, difficulties that have cropped up outside of work, life’s challenges. Especially turbulent times of emotion.
So, what we can do when we find ourselves looking for career motivation?
1. Print a picture of your dream house, holiday, car or experience, to remind yourself what it is that you are working towards
When you have a clear understanding of what it is you truly want, it makes it a whole lot easier to work backward and figure out why you are doing what you are doing. Perhaps seeing your dream actually helps you realize what it is that you need to change within your day-to-day. You may start to gain an understanding of what you need to incorporate your visions into your everyday reality.
2. Take yourself of a weekend away, a solo trip
Spend that time quiet and listening to your own gut feelings and instincts. Write down exactly how you want your days to look, who is there. What are you doing in the mornings? What hours are you working, what duties would you like to be included? How much money do you need to earn? Remember, you know what dream you are working towards, what money do you need to be earning to get there?
3. Ask 5 people what your best attributes are and why
An interesting exercise, but an incredibly effective one. Asking people what the best things about you really are. You’ll be interested to hear the responses. There may be something about you, a talent you didn’t realise you had that can lead you down a new career path or help you find a side hustle that can lead to something later. The universe has a funny way of leading us to where we need to go.
4. Find an idol
Spend some time researching experts in their field within interests you have. This should be someone that you look up to and admire, write down exactly why you resonate with them and what excites you about their journey
5. Write a mission statement
Your very own lifelong mission statement! It’s actually a great exercise to think about the footprint you want to leave behind you. Your mission statement should include what it is you want to achieve and the legacy you want to leave. Don’t think too much about it, it’s really more of a gut feel exercise . This can help connect you to your purpose and help you find that little extra bit of motivation towards your ultimate goal.
