Corporate wellness, what a novel idea?! One we’d typically read about and then move on with our lives signing and thinking we have no time to actually include!
Most of us have experienced the impact of all work and no wellness… Working too hard, feeling like we have taken on way too much.
Then, the aches and pains creep in.
Maybe your lower back? The tension in your shoulders, perhaps even your neck as well?
After a busy week, you often go home and decide to just ‘not bother’ with the gym or yoga.
Mainly because you are feeling well, a little flat.
Maybe it’s just easier to grab a glass of wine and watch Netflix? Hey, not that there’s anything wrong with a little tipple here and there!
But before you know it, you go to sleep wake up and it’s straight back to work.
Seriously, it’s no wonder we get sick, ill or just plain sad.
So many of my colleagues over the years have come to me and complained of bad backs, constantly catching the flu, migraines, shoulder injuries, and fatigue. So many of these common and pesky complaints are often preventable, with the proactive approach of wellness at work.
It’s so easy to say ‘I’ll work out later’, or ‘I’ll go next week’.
Well, guess what, later turns in to never, and next week turns in to not at all! It’s a vicious circle and it’s not uncommon for hard workers to go months without exercise and mental health investments.
We get so caught up in our needs and desires for more money, providing, and our own egos telling us that we need to do more.
When you do take a step back, often you will find that this is when you get floored with a sickness. (How annoying!)
Ever noticed how it’s the long weekend or that holiday week you’d booked long ago and been so excited about, that you get ill? Living in a constant state of ‘go go go’ catches up eventually, IF the wellness investments aren’t made along the way.
You CAN do the things you want to do, achieve the things you really want to achieve, even if too many people it seems you are taking on too much.
Just take a step back and invest a little into your body and your mind along the way.
A small percentage of that effort invested into work, family, and commitments, placed into your own health and wellbeing, will often make all difference.
So, what can we do DURING THE DAY where we have ZERO excuses not to include some wellness into our lives at work?
1. Sat down? Chair stretches!
Some gentle twists, neck stretches, folding forward to stretch out the lower back. Extending arms up and over the head to release the shoulders. There are plenty of easy exercises you can try to get yourself moving at work. Wallah, corporate wellness!
2. Breathing techniques.
The easiest is to spend 5 minutes slowing down your exhalations. Breathe in for a count of 4, breathe out for a count of 5. You’ll be amazed at how powerful this cheeky little exercise really is.
3. Swap a coffee with a lemon and ginger tea (even just one!)
it’s all natural, gives you a subtle boost of energy and has a whole host of health benefits to help you while you are slaving away at work. Easy to implement right away.
4. Kindness to colleagues.
Don’t roll your eyes! I swear the good energy flows. Be kind to the people around you, you don’t have to go overboard or anything, just little acts of kindness will send out good energy to the people around you, as well as make you feel good for knowing you are doing some good deeds. A powerful and easy to implement the idea to focus on.
5. Bone Broth.
There is definitely a valid reason for people for people to be going crazy for this stuff! I got this tip from a colleague who absolutely swears by a morning bone broth. It’s not for everyone, but I do happen to know that it does wonders for you and benefits range from stronger bones, a reduction in inflammation, it’s full of nutrients and it helps the gut. Worth a try!
