Work smarter; not harder they say
The strategy to ‘work smarter not harder’ reduces output and focuses on the return of your time investment. I get it and I understand why this is the key focus for the masses aspiring career professionals.
I must confess, I’ve always been incredibly passionate about my career (largely due to my ongoing desperate need to be good at what I do) so this often overrides the concept of working smart. It’s not really within my remit to advise you on that approach.
Getting professional advice from the experts – In the form of coaching or consulting, of course, this too can increase your bottom line and help you progress. However, it’s not always an option to heavily invest in that area while we have so many other financial obligations and vices (food, wine, indulging, keeping ourselves sane while working full-time), especially when there are steps you can take yourself, to improve your chances of earning more right now.
A simple concept
Arguably, I’m sharing the most simplistic and the most easily accessible method that you can implement immediately with complete confidence in the result. Which is to decide on the attitude that you are going to bring to your own day/desk/team/office.
You can make a conscious choice to bring a positive attitude to your day, despite the outside influences that are occurring regularly, and more often than not, are outside of your control.
When all is said and done
You can find yourself being pulled from pillar to post by one or all of the following:
- A nasty email
- Cranky boss
- All hell breaking loose at home
- 90-year old driver in front of you on the way to work
- All red lights ahead
- A lost deal which would have made you rich
- A rude client on the phone that you can’t get rid of
- Forgotten lunch
- Favourite fitness class cancelled
The list could go on. There’s a whole host of things that can knock you off your winning stride.
I challenge you
Are you aware of how unstoppable you are, when your head is in the game? Do you have any idea how much you are capable of earning when you can control your mind and your own internal dialogue?
This is one of the most amazing things I learned from my mother. Then again, later through yoga and other amazing mentors, including Will Smith, but just to clarify, I don’t know him personally! (Unfortunately). He does have an amazing social media presence that you should definitely check out.
The common theme among these incredible influences that I’ve encountered, is the power of your own mind. Once you have decided on your attitude, everything else starts to move aside.
The outside factors have less importance
The outside influences don’t disappear. There are always hurdles and speed bumps. What you’ll find, is that these influences begin to have less importance. Mainly because you already know the attitude you are going to have. I’m going to be positive and focused today, all day. No matter what happens, that’s the attitude I will have. Once you have embedded this into your psyche, your potential for outstanding results dramatically increases.
The power of knowing the choice is yours
It’s an incredibly powerful tool, knowing that the choice is yours. Whether you opt to be negative or positive. Whether you decide to be angry or cranky about a decision at work or the slow-moving truck, you are stuck behind, the decision is made by you about the attitude you decide to bring to each situation, and each day.
