I have seen it first hand, on both sides of the spectrum. The company that wrongly assumes that money will make employees happy, paying well above the national standard. Yet, the staff morale went from low, to the deep depths of a bottomless pit! People were borderline miserable at times! Management also then assumed, that the staff were ungrateful, and disinterested for success.
Paying more, simply did not work. Why? Money should buy happiness!
Well, you then have the company that paid ever-so slightly higher than the national standard, however provided an abundance of genuine recognition for great work. The also involved employees in the wider business with goals, performance and processes. They also invested heavily in great leaders.The results on morale were staggering. I was the only one to ever leave that organisation, ever! Well ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, maybe a few others.
But most of those whom I sat besides, are still there 10 years later, and very, very happy.
Staff retention was like nothing I have ever encountered or heard of again.
Where did the high-flying, generous salary company go wrong?
Where did they go wrong? Was there anything acutely wrong with the way the organisation was run or structured? Well no, not really. Longer scheduled hours, with the mentality being that, you were paid well, so you should work longer. That probably didn’t help. Management did give shout outs for good work, so that should be a good thing. What was it that made the staff borderline miserable and unmotivated?
In short, they simply didn’t feel valued.
The employees worked hard, but they weren’t a part of the company’s mission. They weren’t following a leader in to battle, they simply didn’t feel a part of something.
